Our History
Grande Cache Transition House Society was founded on May 27, 1985. For more than four decades, we have been the only domestic violence shelter in Grande Cache, serving women and children in a region where the nearest alternative shelter is more than 100 kilometres away.
We have operated continuously since our founding, through changes in funding, staffing, and the broader landscape of services available to women in northern Alberta. Our work has never stopped.
We are a registered Alberta society and a Canadian charity (CRA #107446593RR0001). We are a member of the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters (ACWS).

Land Acknowledgment
We honour and acknowledge the territory of Treaty 8 on which Grande Cache is located. We honour and respect the Mountain Cree, the Woodland Cree, the Plains Cree, the Foothills Ojibwe, and the Metis peoples who have made these mountains and hills their home for many generations, and the Metis Nation of Alberta's Region 4.
We recognise that we are Treaty people and we have a responsibility to become aware of our shared history, to understand the spirit and intent of Treaty 8, and in doing so to honour the past, be aware of the present, and work toward a just and caring future built on peace, friendship, and understanding.
Executive Director
Shauna Meaney
Shauna Meaney has served as Executive Director of Grande Cache Transition House Society since January 2020.
Shauna began her career at GCTHS as a House Mom, providing direct hands-on care for women and children coming through our doors. She went on to work as an Outreach Worker and as a Crisis Worker. That experience across every part of our organisation is the foundation of her leadership.
Her philosophy is straightforward: everyone deserves safety, support, and the resources they need to move forward. Her work ensures that GCTHS remains a place where every person who comes to us feels heard and respected.
